NIRMALA: an emotional journey

Recently I read the mesmerizing Hindi version of novel called "Nirmala" of famous author
Munsi Premchand. I got the reference of this beautiful book from Instagram. I ordered this book and found that it has just 250 pages! It was very thin. It's low number of pages kept me thinking about my decision to buy it. Anyways I started reading it and here I am telling my first review. I will keep it very short yet effective.

NIRMALA

Nirmala was written by Munsi Premchand in 1926. This book being a satirical and melodramatic, brings in front of us, a horrific conclusion of wrong decisions, jealousy, dubiousness in a relation etc.

It starts with a girl namely "Nirmala", she is eldest of her 4 siblings. Her father was a lawyer and mother- a housewife. At the age of 15, her parents started finding her a groom and they found one. Nirmala used to be very excited and enthusiastic girl. When she came to about her parent's decision, she became very thoughtful and serious. There is a scene where she thinks that a girl does not have any household of her own. After marriage, a girl has to leave her own and then she becomes a guest in her own house.

The story takes an ugly turn when after an altercation about the marriage of their children, her father pretend to leave the house and got killed by an old foe. This is the time where her story gets written in this beautiful book. Nirmala was married to a person just double of her age who has three boys because her in-laws-to-be rejected her as her mother was unable to provide dowry to them.

Munsi Totaram, her 35 years old husband was himself a lawyer. His wife died some years back leaving her 3 boys with her husband. Earlier he tried to make Nirmala happy but she herself was irritated from her marriage. She never felt comfortable with Munsiji. Nirmala felt very good playing with boys of her husband. Elder boy was of her age, so Munsiji started suspecting character of his wife and this dubious nature took a huge toll on him leading death of his first son. He dies of grief about his father's suspecting nature. Next two boys also embraced death because of this unhappy marriage.

Motherless boys, although Nirmala loved them and never said anything wrong to them, were engulfed by death and reason somewhere was this mismatched marriage.

Although I found this story very melodramatic as almost every character was dead, and those left were half dead. But this novel showcase dowry, mismatched marriages and so many other problems of society that are still persistent.

Nirmala- a happy girl whose life turned brutal because of rules and wrong nature of society. She also embraced death at the end.

I would like to make a conclusion that might not be very much agreeable to all but if we want to imply the moral of the story in present time so it would be like this- people should respect wishes of their children. Dowry, still happening in many forms, should be stopped completely. Society needs a great change, as it is because of societal taboos and especially --> 'log kya kahenge' that people make wrong decisions.

Thankyou!! happy reading!! :)

HARD TIMES CREATE STRONG MEN

Introduction We have often come across people saying that when we are put into challenging situations, God himself is testing us  ✨ . Once out of that situation, we develop resilience and open ourselves to face this ever-evolving and challenging world. It is said that our challenges begin from the day we are born, but sometimes, we tend to normalize these challenges by blaming the situation  😶 . There are many times when these challenges are in someone's control, and they can make life easier, but they don't. We have doctrines like the polluter pay principle, which clearly states that one who harms the environment also bears the cost, but let me ask, how often do we follow it? and how often do we try to enforce it?  Remember the water crisis in Chennai? the time when a metropolitan city like Chennai was facing a huge water shortage in 2019, and water was brought by train from 200 kms away, such incidents are not in isolation now, they are a sign for us to wake up from o...

Model United Nations and its learning

Recently I completed my first MUN competition organised by Gujarat national law University, Gandhinagar. When I heard about a MUN, it was the first day of my university and I was thinking that what is this demon which was hidden from me, of course, I was into my studies in such a manner that I forget my extracurriculars. In the second semester of my university, I got an opportunity to participate in one and it was great learning. I got United Nations Security Council and trust me it is the best part of UNGA. I got a chance to represent Switzerland, a neutral country recognised as one of the happiest countries in the world. Switzerland is one of the non-permanent members of the UNSC and it is there with various mind-boggling ideas which can really help the world in taking a u-turn from chaos and moving towards stability. Although I didn't have much content to present so I went through the country's foreign policy and tried to inculcate the personality of a delegate of a proud c...
